What is a Growth Guarantee Scheme?

The Growth Guarantee Scheme is a government-backed scheme designed to support access to finance for eligible businesses through accredited lenders.

The scheme is the successor to the Recovery Loan Scheme. Businesses may still recognise the former name, but the current scheme is the Growth Guarantee Scheme.

Finance is provided by accredited lenders, not directly by the government. Applications remain subject to lender checks, scheme rules, status and eligibility.

Is my business eligible for the Growth Guarantee Scheme?

The Growth Guarantee Scheme is delivered through lending partners accredited by the British Business Bank. Each lender may apply its own checks and criteria, so eligibility and suitability are assessed by the lender alongside any other finance options they may offer.

To be considered for the Growth Guarantee Scheme, a business will generally need to:

  • The business must be actively trading in the UK, with more than 50% of turnover generated from trading activity.
  • Annual turnover must not exceed £45 million, assessed on a group basis where applicable.
  • The lender must be satisfied that the business is viable and that the finance request is commercially suitable.
  • Businesses in insolvency proceedings, or considered to be in financial difficulty, may not be eligible.
  • The business may need to confirm that the facility will not exceed the permitted subsidy allowance, including any previous support received through CBILS, Bounce Back Loan Scheme or Recovery Loan Scheme.
  • The government guarantee supports the lender only. The borrower remains fully responsible for repaying the facility.
